Mount Massive and Mount Shavano are both Fourteeners in the Sawatch Range. With its altitude of 14,428 feet, Mt. Massive, just north across a valley from Mount Elbert, is only 12 feet lower than its neighbor which, at 14,440 feet, is the highest mountain in the entire Rocky Mountains. These two mountains are west of Leadville, Colorado. Mount Shavano is at the extreme south end of the Sawatch Range, and its summit is at 14,235 feet. Colin and I hiked up these two mountains on 12 and 14 August 2008.
